Mupinase® Ointment is manufactured by Cipla. This is a topical antibiotic used to treat various bacterial skin infections. The ointment comprises Mupirocin as an active ingredient. Mupirocin is an antibacterial agent in the carbolic acid class of medications. Depending on the concentration, Mupirocin has bacteriostatic and bactericidal abilities.


Mupirocin® Ointment is indicated for treatment of various bacterial skin infections, such as impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis, infected eczema, septicema, etc. It is also can be used for an off-label use to treat mild methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-associated infectious neonatal pustulosis.

MOA (mechanism of action)

Mupirocin ruins the formation of isoleucyl-tRNA by inhibiting RNA (ribonucleic acid) and protein synthesis in bacteria, therefore stops harmful bacteria growth. Such mechanism of action is unique to Mupirocin among other antibiotics. It has a wide range of bactericidal activity against numerous gram-positive and certain gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, Bordetella pertussis, Pasteurella multocida, and Moraxella catarrhalis. It is also effective for treatment of infections caused by meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria.


This Mupinase® Ointment is normally applied to the skin 3 times a day, usually for 10 days.

Consult your doctor if you see no improvements in 3-5 days of Mupinase® Ointment usage.

Before you apply the ointment, ensure the affected area is clean and dry.

Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected area. After applying the ointment, you may use a gauze to cover the area of application.

Wash your hands before and after using Mupinase® Ointment.

Consult your doctor on how often to apply Mupinase® Ointment.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose.


Do not exceed the doctor's recommended dose. If an overdose occurs and you are feeling unwell, you should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.


Store at a room temperature from 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F) away from moisture and heat. Throw away the tube after the expiration date. Keep away from children.

Side effects

The most common side effects of Mupinase® Ointment are:

  • burning
  • itching
  • dry skin
  • redness of the skin
  • peeling of the skin on the areas of application
  • blistering
  • headache
  • nausea
  • stinging

Less common but more serious side effects of Mupinase® Ointment are:

  • severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, excessive itching, dizziness)
  • eye or local irritation
  • antibiotic-associated diarrhea

Side effects occurrence does not only depend on the medication you are taking, but also on your overall health and other factors.


Do not take Mupinase® Ointment if you are allergic to Mupirocin or any other antibiotic isolated from Pseudomonas fluorescens.

Do not take Mupinase® Ointment if you are allergic to any of the other ingredients comprised in Mupinase® Ointment.

Do not take Mupinase® Ointment if you have a history of severe allergic reactions associated with using antibiotics.

Do not apply Mupinase® Ointment if you have a history of pseudo membranous colitis.

Do not apply more Mupinase® Ointment than the amount prescribed for you.

Avoid swallowing or getting in your eyes or on mucosal surfaces. If it does get there, wash with water.

Do not use the Mupinase® Ointment if it has already expired.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant. Mupinase® Ointment should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

Do not combine breastfeeding and Mupinase® Ointment usage without your doctor’s approval.

Do not use Mupinase® Ointment on large areas of broken or damaged skin, especially if you suffer from reduced kidney function.

Wash your hands with soap before and after Mupinase® Ointment application.
